Fruit Buyer’s Report | Fruitful Office July 2014

Dear All,

Everyone loves the summer - and we love the summer varieties! These have been the highlights:

  • Berries. Strawberry season has run its course (it has been a good one!) and we have now moved onto cherries. Cherries are one of the very low calorie fruits but they are rich in nutrients, vitamins and minerals. For example, they are a rich source of melatonin which helps to improve sleeping patterns. British cherries are the ones to go for - look out particularly for the larger ones since these are particularly sweet and juicy.
  • Peaches. Peaches have become more widely available and we have introduced flat peaches into our seasonal fruit mix. Flat peaches are high in antioxidant Vitamin C, which helps the body to develop resistance against infectious agents and harmful free radicals. They are also rich in minerals such as potassium, fluoride and iron. This peach variety can be eaten a bit firmer (slightly less ripe) without losing any sweetness. A fun fruit available at this time of the year!
  • Plums. There are about 2,000 plum varieties grown worldwide! Plums are rich in antioxidants which helps to reduce the risk of cancer. Look out for the Spanish Black Diamond variety. At the moment they are the best eating variety although you should ensure they are ripe to ensure ultimate taste. In the next few weeks French fruit will become available (look out for Fortune, Sapphire and Presidents) so you might like to progress to that.

Stay healthy everyone.
