Banana deal ‘set to be signed this month’

A historic banana deal, which was agreed at the end of 2009 by members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), is expected to be ratified next week.

The deal is related to import tariffs for South American nations that export bananas, reports Fruit Net.

If import tariffs drop, which they are expected to under the agreement, then banana lovers could benefit from lower prices as duties on the office fruit favourites should decrease too.

The final decision on the deal was reached in principle at the end of last year, which brought an end to one of the longest-running trade disputes to ever be dealt with by the WTO.

In other banana-related news this week, a double banana was found before a fun run organised by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).

Teresa Nightingale, general manager for the WCRF, said: "It just seems such an amazing coincidence that we discovered our ‘double banana’ the day before our Beat the Banana! fun run. I think it’s this banana that will take some beating."
