Fruit Buyer’s Report | Fruitful Office Summer 2018

Dear All,

Summer is well and truly here, and this Summer season is predicted to be one of the warmest in the past eight years for Britain. Hooray!

  • Nectarines/peaches

We use nectarines and peaches fairly interchangeably: after all they are fairly similar apart from the texture of their skin and size of pit.

Like most fruit, nectarines have a diverse range of health benefits, including:

    • Promoting a healthy heart: copper in nectarines is an essential mineral which helps to control your blood pressure and heart function, whilst potassium has been linked to lower blood pressure and reduced risk of stroke;
    • Keeping you energised: the copper and potassium also help our energy levels by preventing conditions, like hypokalemia, which leave us feeling tired and weak;
    • Protecting your skin: nutrients such as Vitamin E in nectarines can act as an anti-inflammatory and help protect your skin against free radicals caused by ultraviolet light.

Here are some other varieties to look out for in our seasonal mix baskets:

  • Strawberries

We work mostly with British strawberries and we love them. In addition to the benefits to the environment of "buying local" wherever possible, sweetness levels, size and appearance are consistently better than those from European varieties.

Strawberries are packed with vitamins, fiber and high levels of antioxidants.

Varieties to look out for include: Murano, Royal Sovereign and Jubilee.

  • Grapes

In Summer the grapes are European, with most supply originating from Spain and Italy.

Grapes are a good source of fiber, potassium, and a range of vitamins and other minerals.

Varieties to look out for include: Thompson, Sugarone, Crimson and Flame.

Enjoy your Summer and make sure you keep healthy and stay hydrated by eating plenty of fruit!

Stay healthy everyone.
