Fruit Buyer’s Report | Fruitful Office Spring 2018

Dear All,

It finally looks as though Spring is arriving, and with it a more plentiful availability of fruit varieties.

Here are some new varieties to look out for in our seasonal mix baskets:

  • Berries

We have kicked off the berry season with the inclusion of blueberries and raspberries. We will be alternating between them based on quality of produce. UK strawberries should follow shortly as soon as their quality improves - poor weather in the UK has delayed the start of the season this year.

Berries contain high levels of phytochemicals, nutrients which help to protect your cells against damage. Blueberries contain antioxidants, which may help keep your memory sharp, whilst raspberries contain ellagic acid, a compound with anti-cancer properties.

  • Plums

In Spring several varieties become available and we are always on the lookout for the tastiest: Lady Red, Fortune, Black Amber, Sun Kiss (yellow) to name a few.

Plums are rich in vitamins and minerals which result in their various health benefits. In addition to the well-documented antioxidant benefit, plums are a good source of dietary fiber which will help to regulate your digestive system.

In our essentials mix baskets you should look out for the following:

  • Easy peelers

This is late in the season for European easy peelers, but we are finding sweet Nardacotts from Southern Europe, as well as from Marocco. Everyone loves them so get some whilst they last!

  • Different pear varieties

We like to include Conference pears and other varieties, including Williams, Packham, Farrell, Cheeky and Flamingo pears. We love the consistency of quality and sweetness of Conference pears, but also like to explore other varieties whenever available to the quality we require. Ripening before sending them out is always key, and this is an important part of our service.

Pears are a great source of fiber with a single serving providing about 6 grams of fiber, about 24% of the Reference Daily Intake for a woman under 50.

Remember that eating fruit at work is a great way to quickly reach your 5-a-Day with relatively little effort! So eat plenty of fruit.

Stay healthy everyone.
