Planting Fruit Trees campaign update: 2020 summary

2020 tree planting summary

  • Despite the pandemic, the tree planting campaign has continued to make progress. The local Ripple Africa project teams are careful to observe social distancing and hand hygiene (whilst also sharing these messages with farmers in remote areas where access to TV and radio is limited)
  • Preparation is well under way to plant out as many as 2 million trees in 2021 (the groundwork for which began in 2020). 67 kilos of seeds are needed to plant this many trees!

Case study:

Jesse Mwenefumbo is 34 and mother to four children. Her target was to plant 2,000 pine trees of which over 95% have germinated in 2020. She said, “I will sell the timber when the trees mature so that I can pay school fees for my children, build a house and buy fertiliser for the farm.”
