Planting Fruit Trees campaign update: April to June 2019

Community effort results in charcoal confiscation

  • 95% of the population in Malawi cook using wood or charcoal. Wood for charcoal production is almost without exception harvested illegally. Across much of Malawi, demand for firewood and charcoal is driving deforestation.
  • Choma Hill Forest Conservation committee members, with support from the Forestry Department, mounted roadblocks and confiscated 102 bags of charcoal and 36 push bikes in two joint operations.
  • The local communities are keen to protect their forests, and such confiscations send a powerful message to the charcoal producers.
